David Hall, editor of SPIKES, has won Editor of the Year in one of four awards for Haymarket Network in the Association of Publishing Agencies (APA) International Customer Publishing Awards, held in London last night.

SPIKES magazine and website, for clients Athletics UK and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), also won for Best Consumer Publication (Non-Retail).

The effectiveness of SPIKES was influential in its wins – 40 per cent of its readers have doubled the time they spend watching athletics on TV – but it was also praised for being smart, edgy and controversial.

“I was shocked to see such content,” said one judge. “It really isn’t what you expect, which is why it’s such a great magazine. A tough job fantastically done.”

SPIKES was also highly commended as the runner up in the APA’s Grand Prix, and editor Hall was lauded by judges for his “superb” editorial work that makes “you want to read every issue from front to back”.

Further wins for Haymarket Network came for its work for the British Army and Manchester United Football Club.

Best Brochure went to ‘Army Graduate Opportunities’ – a brochure with a bold design that the judges said was “spot-on for readership”.

Official club site ManUtd.com took away Best Digital Solution of the Year (Consumer) and was praised by judges for being “a perfect blueprint for digital customer publishing”.

Haymarket Network, the editorial customer agency of Haymarket Media Group, was shortlisted 13 times in 10 categories of the awards.
