Camouflage art editor to speak on editorial design

15 Jun 09 09:30

Haymarket Network’s Jon Butterworth, art editor of Camouflage magazine, will be one of three top young designers featured in an Editorial Design Organisation (EDO) talk in London this week.

The event – We Design Magazines – will be a rare chance to see magazine designers show their work and discuss how they came to be working in the industry.

Butterworth will join Violetta Boxill and Cecilia Lindgren from Architectural Review and Erik Torstensson from Man About Town for a panel discussion chaired by EDO Committee member and design consultant Simon Esterson.

Boxill and Lindgren recently attracted attention for their redesign of the 113-year-old Architectural Review, and Erik Torstensson has been creative director for fashion bi-annual Man About Town (not the 1960s Haymarket title of the same name) since its launch in 2007.

Butterworth, meanwhile, is widely recognised for his work on Camouflage, a customer title for the British Army.

He is nominated for Designer of the Year in the 2009 Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) Awards – a title he has previously collected at the Association of Publishing Agencies (APA) Awards and the Press Gazette Magazine Design and Journalism Awards.

The EDO is the UK’s first professional body for editorial designers. It was founded by Paul Harpin, design director of Haymarket Consumer Media and Haymarket Network, and 10 other top design directors.

We Design Magazines is at 6pm on Thursday, June 18, at the Moving Picture Company at 127 Wardour Street, London W1F 0NL. Tickets cost £15 for EDO members, £30 for non-members and £5 for students and tutors.
